Portrait of a Woman, Munich

Born in Harvard, Illinois, Burbank studied at the Academy of Design, Chicago, in 1874. He then studied in Munich and Paris before returning to America. Burbank’s uncle Edward Everett Ayer commissioned the artist to paint portraits of Native Americans, and Geronimo was his first subject; Burbank is believed to be the only person to have painted the legendary Apache leader from life.
