German sculptor and painter Erwin Eisch was the pioneer and spiritual father of the Studio Glass Movement in Europe. In 1962 American Studio Glass pioneer Harvey Littleton, excited to hear of a fellow artist who was using glass as a fine art medium, visited Eisch and they became lifelong friends. An immensely influential figure for the development of American Studio Glass, Eisch often rejects or obscures the qualities of glass that attract so many artists to the medium: its transparency and translucency.—Toledo Museum of Art, Ohio
