A member of the extended Dial family, Ronald Lockett grew up surrounded by tremendous folk art. “I always drew and painted, but I was going to give it up because I thought art was for white folks,” says Lockett. Thankfully, the encouragement of family members spurred Lockett to pursue art and develop his own unique style, one that exists primarily in paintings, but often incorporates the use of found materials in his assemblages. Lockett disguises the poignant subject matter of his painting—from the Holocaust to the Ku Klux Klanin—haunting pastoral scenes.
