Rockford Art Museum presents its 15th annual Portfolio Day art college fair on Monday, Nov. 18, from 10 AM to 3 PM with 19 colleges and universities on site to meet with students. The only program of its kind in the Rockford region, Portfolio Day at RAM connects students interested in collegiate art programs with some of the best in the Midwest. Free admission, free portfolio reviews and free workshops for students. Rockford Art Museum (RAM) opens new art exhibition Bold Abstractions: Paintings from the Thoma Collection on Friday, October 11, with a gallery walk 5:15–6 p.m., members preview 6–7 p.m., and free public opening 7–8:30 p.m. at RAM, located inside the Riverfront Museum Park at 711 North Main Street in downtown Rockford, Illinois. The exhibition remains on view through January 26, 2020. Support for Bold Abstractions—including free daily admission to all museum visitors—is provided by the Carl & Marilynn Thoma Art Foundation. Bold Abstractions at Rockford Art Museum marks the first time the Thoma’s significant post-war painting collection has been shown at a public institution.

‘The Big Chair’ by the late Jim Julin (1956–2012) has been freshly painted and restored to its original color by Rockford artist John Deill.

Rockford Art Museum Curator Carrie Johnson was recently promoted to Chief Curator and named Interim Executive Director of the museum. 

Johnson has been with RAM for the past 13 years, most recently as Curator, leading the development and innovative implementation of exhibitions while overseeing the care for and management of the RAM Permanent Collection. A Rockford native, she has a deep knowledge of the organization and a passion for supporting and working with artists, having also led our education department prior to becoming Curator.

Rockford Art Museum (RAM) Curator Carrie Johnson is the first featured speaker of the New Genres Art Space (NGAS) Speaker Series, which kicks off Thursday, July 25, 6:30–7:30 PM. NGAS is located on the second floor of Rockford Public Library’s Nordlof Center at 118 North Main Street in downtown Rockford, Illinois. This series of free public talks by visual artists and cultural producers in Rockford provides a platform for cultural producers to share their history, practice, and ideas with the Rockford area community.

Rockford Art Museum (RAM) hosts the latest installment of its popular paint-and-sip series, “Cork + Canvas: Painting with Bob” on Tuesday, July 23, 6–8 PM at RAM, 711 N. Main St., Rockford. Participants will create a painting with Bob while enjoying drinks from Prairie Street Brewing Co. during this Ross-inspired event. The newest installment of the popular programming series “Coffee with the Curator” takes place 10–11 AM on Friday, July 12, at Rockford Art Museum (RAM), 711 N. Main St., Rockford. Get a behind-the-scenes look into the process of creating the museum’s new exhibition Chance Encounter with RAM Curator Carrie Johnson. Free admission, and free coffee provided by Rockford Roasting Company.

Rockford Art Museum (RAM) will be open 10 AM–5 PM on Thursday, July 4. The museum will return to regular Thursday hours next week (10 AM–7 PM). The current feature exhibition is Chance Encounter: Julie Heffernan and Shelly Mosman (on view June 8–September 29 at RAM). RAM is also a Blue Star Museum this summer, offering active-duty servicemembers and up to five family members free museum admission from Armed Forces Day (May 18) through Labor Day (September 2).
