A devout Baptist, Scott was inspired by street artists and Renaissance paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art that he encountered during a visit to New York in 1968. Upon his return to Atlanta, he undertook a self-imposed apprenticeship at the High Museum of Art, meticulously studying individual aspects of Old Master paintings until he had taught himself a mastery of composition, iconography, glazing, color and contrast. He applies Bondo to his wooden frames, which he then carves to imitate the elegant design of Baroque frames.
