The Rockford Art Museum Docent Program has been in existence since 1991. More than just tour guides, these docents are volunteer teachers who provide learning experiences and enhanced enrichment for groups of all ages and interests through museum tours and special activities.

Docents are often utilized for school group tours, outreach activities, and in-depth tours catering to groups interested in a specific facet of an exhibition or focus area of the permanent collection.

The RAM Docent Program operates year-round. General requirements include: Attendance at no less than eight monthly meetings per each year and commitment to lead eight one-hour tours throughout the year (four may be affiliated with the Terrific Tuesday program). Participation in special training sessions that may include special lectures and/or field trips is encouraged. Sessions are designed to broaden knowledge in art history/appreciation and art education and to increase confidence in ability to lead tours and engage with visitors about artwork on view. Benefits include: free individual membership to Rockford Art Museum that includes a 10% discount at the RAM Store, free docent training that includes print materials and educational programming, plus discounts on registration fees for certain museum classes and trips.
